Why is PC chipset devided into north and south bridge? are there any different in the way they were built?
i know some pc board has combined south/north bridge but it still did not answer the question. seems intel, ATI, VIA and SIS are all using 2 chips solution. can anyone give a sensible answer? many thanks
The main reason for having separate North and south bridges because each serve different purpose. As said by a person in the previous answer, North bridge is used for high speed transactions with processor, RAM and PCI express, and south bridge is used for connecting relatively slower devices, mainly devices under PCI bus. So, if a North bridge and South bridge combined together, there is a chance of getting bottleneck because of handling both fast and slow devices (FSB is much faster than PCI) by a single chip, and it will lead to performance issues. But, why some makers come with a single chip? Well in some non-intel processors Memory controller is in-built and its literally unnecessary for having a fast bridge for just PCI-Expres/AGP.
