I have a e-Geforce 8600 GT in my computer, why would my computer freeze up or shut down and come back on?

AMD Athlon 64 3800+
OS: Windows XP media center
RAM: 2GB DDR2

what happens is i am using my cd drive or playing a game and my monitor well go blank but the computer is still running, so i will rest it and it is good in tell i play a game or use the cd drive again.
I have a GForce 8500Gt in my computer and it acts weird too, I don't know why. I asked my dad who is really into computers and he said to get the latest updates, drivers and such. He said if that doesn't work then to go in where it lists the hardware, delete the name of the video card then restart the computer? I'm not sure.
