Computer's Desktop Personal Computers
The only knowledge you will have when you are out to buy a desktop will be the type of desk top you wish to acquire. In the desktop market however you will find wide range of configurations, different shapes and sizes and fast changing specifications of features.
The following guide has been prepared to ensure that you are able to arrive at the right specification of the desired features. Links are provided with each feature to arrive at variety of models available with that feature.
Processor-
CPUs are classified as the main feature which decides what you can do, how much you can do and in what way fast you can use along with your system. Processor specification states the brand, the processor type and also the processor speed. More common understanding till some time ago was that higher the processor speed better stands out as the performance. Less than anymore. The major processor manufacturers Intel and AMD have revolutionized the processor market with dual core and quad core processors all in a section of silicon.
Single core chips like AMD Sempron, and Intel Celeron D don't cost much and they are configured in inexpensive desktops greatly assist low performance and low speed. They still run the show it is because most application is suitable for execution one thread (one stream of knowledge) or processor core.
The AMD Athlon 64 isn't fast but it really satisfies all computing requirements. The purchase price too has come down using the launch of newer processors.
Dual processor is two processor cores on one bit of silicon. The luxury of having multiple processors is power to handle more than one thread. When multiple applications are running each time, the multiple processors are parallel processing and this also adds to the speed of performance. Customers going to multi task, 3D gaming with desktops must insist on dual core processor type.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 -
The Intel Core 2 Duo processors are fast and power efficient and will run by far the most intense applications. It is actually configured in cheap systems plus in gaming PCs.
Processor speed is a second specification with the processor that has to have attention before purchase, as this feature too determines what use you'll be able to put your desktop to. The processor executes instructions received from RAM. In case the desktop means for complicated calculations and drawings for graphic images and games a faster processor will likely be required.
1.5 to two GHz- Processor speed in such a range would suffice the needs of students or small offices.
2.2 to 2.7 GHZ
2.8 to 3.4 GHz- Processors with 3 GHz and higher speeds like Pentium 4 and equivalent AMD processors are great for desktop multimedia and Gaming PCs.
Memory- Your next within the feature listing of all desktops is a Memory. The specifications state the place and type. Space mentioned in MBs or GBs. There ought to be enough memory to perform each of the software you wish to use, so check out of the requirements of the intended software prior to deciding on space specification of RAM. Larger the memory, faster the processor will operate simply because it permits larger quantity of data to become transferred.
1 GB of RAM gives good performance and it is the minimum requirement to own Windows Vista. 2 GB would be the minimum requirement of multimedia.
128 to 256 MB-
512 to 1024 MB- Home users and Residence would require 512 MB or even more
The 2 main varieties of memory are DDR SDRAM and DDR2 SDRAM. The DDR2 version is faster of the two. These memory types are categorized in accordance with features like bandwidth and clock speed. Memory could be upgraded by Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM).
Hard drive- Definitely you should desire to store many of the data you use and create, the Os used and many types of your applications.
20 to 40 GB- A 40 GB hard disk drive provides enough storage for home, family and office applications although not for the demanding gaming and multi media applications.
80 to 160 GB- For gaming and digital music hard disk drive requirement might be in this range
250 to 320 GB- for anyone who is dabbling with a large amount of info like digital images and multi media files carefully consider models while in the array of 200 to 350 GB.
Higher GB nearly 500GB storage drives too can be acquired.
Desktops have hard disk drives of 3.5inch size. Hard disk drives come with an in built motor that spins in speed selection of 5,400 to 15,000 revolutions for each minute; most designs include speed of 7200rpm. The power linked to higher speeds is faster access and storing of more data.
Size and Shape- Desktops appear in several different size and shapes. The little form factor cases have numerous features for basic functioning however upgrading with expansion cards isn't likely. The all-in-one model has both display and computer enclosed in a box, hence well suited for space constraint situations.
The disadvantage is the computer can get obsolete until the display. The Mid tower case and Full-tower case will be more popular lately because of their sleek look. Large amount of interior space and slots are for sale for expansion and up-gradation with harddrives and optical drives. There are plenty of ports to get in touch peripherals like printers and old digital cameras.
Find by Type Budget desktops- Your ability to buy desktops interest the property and student customers. Desktops within $400 have features that serve the everyday feature word processing, spreadsheets, letterbox and web surfing. The processors from AMDs including the Sempron or perhaps the budget processors of Athlon series and Intel's Pentium 4 match this type of budget. Lenovo ThinkCentre A60 (9631D4U) PC Desktop IBM ThinkCentre S50 Refurbished Intel Computer's desktop - Intel P4 2.6GHz, 512MB DDR, 40GB HDD, DVD-R (J156-4384)
If you plan for gaming, raise the budget say within 500 to 600$ and have 3 GHz processor, 512MB Memory, a thin TFT screen and 120 GB disk drive. You can even upgrade the model. Upgrading the RAM may be possible which has a small amount. Check these models:
Business Desktops- Business desktops must come with a specific amount of quality, will much that you desire knowning that too in a competitive price. Security features, warranty details and availability of onsite service have to be given priority. Desktops configured with power saving top features of dual core processors by both AMD and Intel gives excellent value for cash. You can consider these models: Dell XPS 700 (XPS700-6366PB1) PC Desktop Lenovo 3000 J115 PC Desktop
Gaming Desktops- You would like speed to overcome your gaming opponent and Intel Core2Duo might be ideal or still better the AMD Athlon 64 X2s processors. The AMD's dual cores stand better chance as most gaming applications are not intended to benefit from the multi threading capabilities of Intel processors. You can even opt for the high-speed hardrives. Look into the models at:
Media Center and Digital Entertainment Desktops- You should have these types of desktops for storing and sharing music, photos, editing videos, creating movie DVDs and music CDs. For such peak performance the characteristics required are fastest processors, biggest hard disk drives and brightest displays. And if you've deep pockets check out the models at Dell XPS 700 (XPS700-2KX3WB1) PC Desktop Horsepower Compaq dc7600 (EH798UC) PC Desktop
Find by Price $230 to $400- In their normal low range you may be surprised and satisfied for getting desktops that contain powerful processors and graphic cards. They have enough features with supporting general business tasks and office computing chores.
$400 to $600- Ideally fitted for office computing, networking, home or small office users. These inexpensive desktops offer wonderful features and satisfaction for the extra bucks spent.
$600 to $1600 - Sturdy structure, large amount of ways for upgrading and will fast adapt to changing company and good multi-media control buttons.
What's the diff. between DDR & DIMM RAM & are they interchangeable?
The technical answer... DIMM = Dual Inline Memory Module. DDR = Double Data Rate. Really, they are independant of each other. To really confuse you, DDR (and DDR2 for that matter) memory comes on a DIMM. The DIMM can have different configurations, and as mentioned already... different speeds, different timings, etc etc. So, the answer is not a simple one. The best thing to do, as mentioned already, is to check your motherboard manual to figure out what kind of memory will work. If you bought a "manufactured" PC from a big company, this may not be in your manual. You may have to go to a memory manufacture's website to figure it out. See my link in the Sources section below.
Thanks,
Graham.
