Why does my motherboard have 4 DIMM slots when it can only handle 2 RAMs?

I have a Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L motherboard with 4 1066Mhz DIMM slots. I bought 2x1GB Kingmax and 2x1GB CSX memories(I originally wanted 4 CSX RAMs but they only had 2 of them).
The problem is I can use either the Kingmaxes or the CSXes, but not all of them at once because the system won't start(at all).
I managed to get 2 more CSX RAMs from another computer and it recognised as 4GB but when I tried to install windows(XP and Vista) it just died with BSOD after a few seconds.

Since the computer works perfectly with 2GB RAM I would assume that it isn't a compatibility issue(although only Kingmax is listed on the RAM support list on Gigabyte's website), so what could it be? Why won't it work, what is the point of the 4 DIMM slots then?

The most likely problem IS a compatibility issue. Some motherboards are very VERY fussy about the CAS latency and other timing factors. Now here is what I would do to try and see if you can get things to work together.

You need to know the voltage range of both sets. One set might have a voltage range of 2.8 - 3.1 Volts, operating. The other set might have a stricter limit of just 3.1 Volts. The problem comes in when one set is running at 2.8 volts and the other set is running at 3.1 volts. Note, what you want to do is to make sure both sets are running at 3.1 volts. You had better hope that both sets have voltages that are in the same range or they won't work together!

So the first thing is to identify the exact RAM you have. The stick should have a label on it giving you the exact stock number of the RAM.
Go to the manufacturer site and look up your RAM and get the voltage range for it (both sets). Once you are armed with this information, then get into BIOS

In BIOS, in the memory settings, you want to switch from autodetect to manual on your memory detection settings. On newest motherboards, the BIOS will TELL YOU what your CAS latency and other timings are for the modules, but does not tell you what the voltage ranges are.

For example, if one set has a voltage range of 2.8 - 3.1 and the other set is 3.1, then you want to set the voltage of both sets to 3.1 Volts.
Save the settings and then exit BIOS and reboot. Now try to install your operating system.

Second trick - BE CAREFUL where you install the memory. Often, the four memory slots have two sets of colors, like black and yellow or orange and black, or whatever. Make sure you READ THE MOTHERBOARD MANUAL, which normally will tell you that you must populate certain slots first before others are populated. Typically, this is slots 1, 3 and then 2, 4.

So you will take the first set of sticks and populate slots 1.3 first. Then take the second set and populate 2, 4. Check and make sure this is what your mobo manual says! Then go into BIOS and make the changes I mentioned based on the known voltage ranges. Then try to install.
